Student Visa Requirements

Subclass 500 - Student Visa

Key Requirements:

  • Enrolled in a registered course of study (CRICOS registered)
  • Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement
  • Sufficient funds to cover tuition, living costs, and travel
  • English language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent)
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
  • Meet health and character requirements

Work Rights:

Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.

Processing Time:

Typically 1-4 months depending on the country of application and completeness of documentation.

Graduate Visa Options (485)

Graduate Work Stream

For graduates whose skills are on the skilled occupation list and have completed a qualification related to their nominated occupation.

  • Valid for 18 months
  • Must have skills assessment
  • Must be under 50 years old
  • Full work rights

Post-Study Work Stream

For graduates who have completed a degree, masters, or PhD from an Australian institution.

  • Valid for 2-4 years (depending on qualification)
  • No skills assessment required
  • Must be under 50 years old
  • Full work rights

Student Visa (500) Work Rights

During study periods: Up to 48 hours per fortnight. During scheduled course breaks: Unlimited hours. Work rights begin when your course commences.

Graduate Visa (485) Work Rights

Full work rights with no restrictions. You can work in any occupation, for any employer, anywhere in Australia.
